Joe K.
See: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=29246 Here's a nice close up of the prototype Robert the Robot by Ideal. Note the colored (not clear) eyes, the different style hands, slide switch (not rotary) on chest, the lack of a removable "belly button" tool cover, and the four part body assembly (the upper section consists of front and back pieces, the lower section has right and left pieces).Oddly enough, the remote controller pictured in this particular ad is the style that ultimately went into production. Some earlier artwork depicts a bulbous "ray gun" design. The Space Cruiser pedal car by Garton is a bit far afield. I kind of like the working flying saucer gun it came with! Dcell - care to add the photos? Thanks!

dratomic
That space cruiser is the COOLEST thing I've ever seen. The fact that they stuck the saucer gun on it is just the icing on the cake. Man, I was born way too late...

Joe K.
Here's an auction:http://cgi.ebay.com/1958-Ideal-Toys-Ad-Roy...1QQcmdZViewItemwith this single catalog page:http://i20.ebayimg.com/01/i/05/94/41/a2_1.JPGthat the seller claims to be from 1958. Assuming that is correct, it would show that Ideal's Robert was available for five straight years. Not a bad run. The photo of the toy in the ad is that of the Type III Robert the Robot.I'd still like to find better documentation for this 1958 date, but until it comes along, this'll have to do. Fineas J. Whoopie
So then can we asume that Robert I and II had only a few short years of production each? Interesting.
