robothut
Since the Roto Smoker project was such a big hit (see thread http://danefield.com/alpha/forums/index.php?showtopic=7877) I decided to take it apart and add a large 30 segment computer chest display. Also I removed the standard gun clicking sound when the robot rotates and replaced it with a plesent vintage horn buzzer in the top of the Atomic robot man type head that beeps as the eyes flash. The chest display is made of rear projected random flashing ultrabright RED LEDs, 30 of them. Here is a link for more info.http://www.robothut.robotnut.com/CompUhonker.htmlor a short video of operation.http://www.robothut.robotnut.com/CompUhonker.wmvThe digital camera can not handle the ultra bright LEDs the pictures make them look like a yellow color, there not and they do not look like dots either they light up as 30 red squars when ON. robothut
I kept the standard WALK / STOP / Rotate / repeat action. Power is still 2 D cells.

Eagle
John, I have those LED's on my boat. Can't believe how bright they are. What kind of paint do you use? Enamel or Lacquer ? Do you have to touch up tabs and such after assembly ?
robothut
I use all types of paint it just depends on the project, I even have a powder coat system for clean metal parts. Yes I touch up the tabs after assembly, in this case that would just be the two shoulder tabs. I know its not the greatest looking robot when turned off and on display but it is realy killer when its operating, much nicer than the short over loaded digital camera video clip would make you think. Andyman
Killer robot, I love it! Are the LEDs flashing in a set pattern or are they random?
Phil R
Very cool, John. Somehow he reminds me of the HULK, a red HULK. I'd like to see him in green! :P
robothut
Each of the 30 LEDs are the built in flashing circuit type so this gives a non repeating flashing pattern. They operate in the 3 volt to 4.5 volt range, clear when OFF and supper bright red when ON. No dropping resistor or other electronics are required. I do place a filter capacitor on the supply lead to the LEds so that the battery motor brush noise will not affect the Flashing LED operation.
