Thunder Robot

I am trying to follow the variations on the Thunder Robots but to no avail and I know that this group can help. I have seen on eBay the Brown version for a great deal of money stating that it was some number of 600 and then I see the brown one and it is much less but I can't see a difference. I also see a silver with blue hands and then one with red hands. I have also seen a "limited edition numbered" silver one. There also seems to be a chrome/nickle plate version and then the red and blue version. Can anyone give me some insight into the truth. I think I can handle it.

Thanks,

Bryan

Hello Bryon,

Photo A)

Original Retail Price was $ 225.00 USD

TTT * Brown Thunder only 600 made, comes with a darker boxart

and ownership card. At the time the owner then entered his number into a raffle, to

win a Tom Liao hand signed and assembled TTT Golden Radar Robot

( 1 of only 3 )

the first one #1/600 was auctioned on ebay ® and the proceeds

went to a Childrens Fund of some sort , final bid was +/- $1200 USD

* ( Tin Tom ToyS )

Photo B )

Original Retail Price was $ 325.00 USD

TTT * Silver Thunder only 100 made, comes with a darker boxart

and ownership card. Has the clear arms and blue feet + hands.

Inspired by the original silver prototype in a Japan Museum

The above A) TTT have the closest accuracy to

the ASAKUSA Original Thunder appearance.

Photo C)

Original Retail Price was only $ 156.00 USD

Made by JOY TOY, infamous body mold scandel Company

Has a lighter boxart image. Unlimited production

A few collectors got taken as this company undercut the price and

quality of the TTT Thunder, and

sold to the market first before the TTT Co. by serveral weeks or so.

Later sold for around 25.00 USD and broken non working ones sold

for under 10.00 USD

Photo D)

Made by JOY TOY Silver Thunder same as above Photo B )

NOTE Photo C) & D) have the "curved antenna" on top of the head,

as oppose to the straight across antenna.

Photo E)

Schyllings Chrome Thunder came out much later using the TTT body molds

Original Retail Price was $99.99 USD

Photo F)

Schyllings Blue Thunder came out much later using the TTT body molds

Unlimited production

Retail Price $39.00 USD

Photo G)

Schyllings Red Thunder came out much later using the TTT body molds

Unlimited production

Retail Price $39.00 USD

Photo H)

Joy Toy Thunder REPAINTED by Alphadrome member and Master Robot Builder John Rigg

Price =Always well spent money

The thunders all have many differences too numerous to detail.

Examples include ; wheels and hands, eye

brow and mouth designs. Plastic lenses in the forehead & rearhead

have different diamond patterns. On/ Off switch attachment varies, as do

battery contact & battery doors stampping Pattern.

The accordian arms can have softer or harder flex as well.

Chrome platting of the mouth can differ. Box inserts vary from foam,

to styro-block molded to craddle the robot. And function

This is a lengthy topic, and my memory could be wrong slighty

HA HA Toys makes a good one like Photo A) & B ) . Unlimited production

Brown for under $ 40 and the Silver just over $ 40 with the clear

arms like the TTT Silver Thunder. Antenna's are straight.

To add,

Thunder is still one of my favourite

Before the reproduction came out it was mine

and many collectors favourite top 10

But due to his availability he became taken for granted

I own:

  • a TTT brown
  • HAHA brown
  • red schyllings
  • brown schyllings

Very nice explanation Robot Fool on the endless repro Thunder's. You are spot on how Thunder was a top ten must have for many collectors prior to these repro's and now he has just about fallen off the radar screen. This example is one of my greatest qualms concerning repro's (enough has been said about this in other threads).

I still wonder about Henk's rumor (I believe it was Henk) believing that he had heard of a 2nd original silver Thunder in addition to the one found in the Japanese Toy museum.
