What Would You Do?

9tobor9 landed an X-9 wreck over here and said: Do something with it".

As it was beyond repair, I stuck it on the the frame of a w/u "Space Walking repro",

made some arms & hands for it and painted around the repro's litho.

The result is quite pleasing. Finally the original idea behind the Dynamo realised.

But there is a problem: Arms, legs and feet shine like a new pin. (mint, mint, mint,)

the body and the head look like they spend a lo-hong vacation on the beach.

They are definitely beyond repair. The litho is just gone.

Now do I leave the body rusted and the rest super new? press one.

or

Do I apply rust and damage to the rest artificially so it is more a unity? press two.

NB. As an X-9 it is of no value, not even for parts, but as a garage it has gained some.

Help me out, I am on the horns of a dilemma.

What a honey! I'd shine up that latch and leave the rest alone. Lots of robots have some rusted bits and some fresh bits. It looks great. If you're determined to have one or the other, I think you'd be able to get rust all over pretty easily.

:) You know what you must do, Henk, you are simply in denial. You must start with your good X-9, not a rusted wreck! What is a few thousand dollars, anyway? it is what you have wanted all along, a Dynamo Robot. The X-9 that got up and walked away from the bubble car. Go for it! -Larry 7

Henk,

If I remember correctly, the trick to properly weathering

this guy involves nicoteen, and placing the robot in the

house of a surgine who smocks quite a bit.... ;)

Gentlemen, gentlemen!

I presume after an overdosis of "jocular" comments, I deserve no better,

but let's be serious for a moment.

What is better a mismatch of components

or a deliberately aged, but consistent total?

What does your sense as collectors tell you?

btw Grandpa's, at first view senile, suggestion about a limited edition,

isn't so bad after all. It could be done...

It would not be the first thing I would choose to do though.

There is too little new "old" robot in it.

Here is an other picture:

polish up the nose and latch and leave it alone, becareful not to sneeze toward the latch for it may burst into dust particals.

I would dremel off the rust as carefully as possible then

hand paint the areas that are now missing paint.

The arms and legs look GREAT !!!

You could just replace the nose and repaint it.

When done, you would have a MINT, and "Hand Painted Prototype" !!!

And THAT would look good on any shelf !!!

I agree with David.

It strikes me as odd to leave some parts shiny, some parts rusty. The toy looks as if it were a vintage robot with replacement bits, and that doesn't seem to be the effect you're looking for. And as much as it pains me to suggest intentionally messing up a beautiful toy, it'd be much harder to clean it up properly.

Very nice piece, Henk.

Cindy Crawford should get that mole removed, too. While we're at it, how about we smooth off those nasty bolts on Frankenstein's neck?
