Fineas J. Whoopie
That is awesome Oz. It's got a bit of a Jules Vern feel to it. I hope there are more toy boxes with this style of art out there. And , no, I have never seen this.
Joe K.
I've never seen it before, either. The height/depth of the box would indicate a rather large/heavy toy.
Brian..
I've seen the image before but not on a toy box. The artwork is based on an 1840 German print "Dampfmaschinen Pferd" (Steam Engine Horse) which shows a man riding the steam rocket from Paris to St Petersburg. There's a version of the print showing the rocket bound for California: Ernest Plank were famous for their steam toys. My guess is that for this to work as shown the rocket would have to be rotate around a central pylon with a substantial counterweight to balance it. It should have worked fine, though. David Kirk
I love those old boxes with glued on labels. My first commercial toys (Hoobert) were done that way. I ran the label through a little Potdevin label paster and then stuck it to the box. A lot of times people were buying the box as much as the toy.
