Ranger
I bought this space trooper along with a completely bog standard boxed ha ha planet robot. OK, it’s in a box with made in China on it. There is not Japan stamped into the base which looks like it may have been touched up. These can of course also be switched from repro to original and vice versa. The spinners in the head are painted which I have seen on the larger Chinese made space trooper toys. The other main giveaway pointing to it being a Chinese made is the tab at the front bends to the right whereas as far as I I have seen, on the yoshiya made toy it faces to the left. All that said, after looking at it for quite a while I am pretty sure the gold paint is original to the toy? . It looks like it’s been stored for quite a while in a cold damp place. The staples in the box are quite heavily rusted. So, it all looks to be a Chinese made trooper but I the more I look at the gold paint the more it looks to be the original colour. Bit of a mystery. It doesn’t matter either way as I think it looks cool and was only £15 delivered.

David Kirk
Nice variation. I wonder what got done when. Definitely not Japanese - the pressings on those were weak and wrinkly at the edges .
RoboCopy
My thoughts exactly, David. Looks at first sight like a good diy paint job. Of course it’s difficult to judge from just a photo but this paint looks awfully modern.
Ranger
Yes, I have already pointed out all the things that make it a Chinese toy. The paint on the body does look original though. Even has rust spots appearing in it in places.
Ranger
Looking at the tabs, the paint looks like it’s been on there since day one but it’s hard to say. What I can say is we will probably never know but for £15, I am happy with it.
Fineas J. Whoopie
Back in the heyday of the repro I seem to remember a number of "special editions" on toys like the Space Trooper that had molds that made the rounds between different "companies" which as I understand it were basically different investors who would contract a run with a chinese factory and have boxes made with their own logo. Perhaps this was a special color edition of a Chinese made repro? In that scenario it would not be DIY and the paint would be original to the day of manufacture. ? ? ? Nice bot! Would look nice next to a gold Pug Robby.
Ranger
That’s a possibility. I am sure I have seen this colour version somewhere before but it would have been some time ago now.
