space.trucks
Bingo. Knock down one Holy Grail item and pretty sure these are my favorite spacemen of them all. They almost had to have been designed by the same individual(s) who did the 52mm figures for MPC even if manufactured by someone else. Helmets a psychedelic era addition? Database link: http://alphadrome.net/data/displayimage.php?album=24&pid=5351#top_display_media Can try to get a better image if helpful. Figures are numbered 1-4 and in the order packaged left to right. Have yet to see any the other MPC 52mm figures (Pilot/Sitter, Spacewalker, Camera Guy) upscaled to this size but those were designed without support bases. Only Camera Guy actually stood upright unaided and would have needed his odd shaped 02 hose tail for stability. These four loaned themselves to the project more readily. Current stash. Most recent arrival is the silver Geiger Counter guy in front, which has just enough playwear to excuse painting to match the figure behind him. None of my loose silver or blue figures have numbers. One item which came to mind about determining how old they may be: MPC re-designed three of their 54mm spaceman in 1967 to remove the weapons & provide better stability for this guy, shown here in original 1963 form with arm extended. Here he is in the post 1967 re-fit with arm lowered & lower mass increased for better stability, and the position of the arms on the upsizers is a better match. Didn't help much: While I adore the larger ones all but the Geiger Counter guy are top heavy and poorly balanced. Made to fall over. Space Rifle proportions better realized in the larger scale but has no trigger. And he still doesn't have oxygen tanks. The likeness to the 52mm figure is uncanny, with a slight difference in his rectangular suit feature above the Geiger Counter losing the single hole to the left. Got these two as a birthday present Also seen cast in red. The feet of these two are more sunken into the support base then on the silver & blue figures. Or the bases got taller and swallowed the feet? Wondering if these two represent a "later run". Same numbers as the carded set adding a "Made In". The "HONG KONG WVDE IN" with upside down MA is charming. Alternate package concept, pix swiped from an e-bay vendor. Pretty sure it's still up for grabs, too rich for my arteries. Minimal paint interference. He also has a slightly re-designed rectangular suit "unit" different than the other figures.
