Roboto
Legendary, the production company behind the latest Godzilla and Kong beat-'em-ups and the upcoming Villeneuve adaptation of Dune, are in negotiations for the rights to the classic sci-fi hero with the view to bringing him to the big screen and the small screen in both live-action and anime series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Don Murphy and Susan Montford (Transformers, Real Steel) will produce, should the deal be signed off. Anthony 'Buck' Rogers debuted in a 1928 edition of the pulp magazine Amazing Stories in the story 'Armageddon 2419', written by Philip Francis Nowlan. Rogers' origin had him trapped in a coal mine during a cave-in, fall into suspended animation, then wake up almost 500 years into the future amidst an interplanetary war. Buck Rogers became a huge hit after being turned into a newspaper strip in 1929, followed by a movie serial starring Buster Crabbe (above). In 1979, in the wake of Star Wars' huge success, NBC revived the character for the TV series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, starring Gil Gerard and Erin Gray (title sequence, below). Buster Crabbe, famously, guest-starred in one episode as Brigadier Gordon (named for the other space hero he portayed - Flash Gordon).
