Automaton
Frank R Paul has one of my favourite covers. It was at an exhibition on golden age sci fi and it looked like nothing else
Guest
I still have that one, Science and Invention, August, 1924. The first appearance of Paul's Martian. Science and Invention was more "scientific" fiction, it was a combination of Popular Mechanics and Amazing Stories. The interior article is titled "Evolution on Mars". Presented as scientific fact, it details Martian evolution in comparison to human's. Paul would reprise his Martian for later works as well. This one from the back of an Amazing Stories from the 1940's. For a brief period from the mid 1930's to later 1940's, Paul did the front cover and the back cover. Not just covers, Paul would also do all the interior illustrations as well. Not sure what title this was from but it seems that Martians have a smoking addiction or are selling cigs on the black market. Lungs don't look to good... And finally, for Hugo Greensback's brief excursion into comic books, Paul's cover for Superworld Comics, April, 1940.
Guest
I forgot one. This is dated from 1924 and is not from a magazine cover but was a special commission that Paul did, I don't know anymore than that. edit: This was done for Forrest J. Ackerman, the noted science fiction collector. I just noticed the "FJA" on the spaceman's chest, Forrest's initials.
Automaton
I also have this issue and am still amazed at the cover. The detail into why the martian body looks the way it does is well thought out. Theres also this compilation of a lot of his work that has the martian design in it too
Guest
What's really incredible is that Paul didn't have a library of images to get ideas from, he was really the first to come up with many of these images and did so many different ones, everyone that followed had his images to spark their own ideas (many of the early comic illustrators acknowledge the impact Paul had on them). Reading the early magazines, like Electrical Experimenter and Science and Invention, one gets an appreciation of the scientific thought that went into them. Wow, I've never seen that print before. Do you have it? Looks like a limited print by Anthony Brzezinski, never heard of him but when Googled, it looks like he has done a number of Paul's covers. I need to get one of the prints, too cool! So I challenge you to come up with the covers, front & back, that are in the print. I've come up with 12 fronts and 1 back. I know I'm missing a couple, I have no idea where the guys riding the dragons at the top are from. I'll do a composite of the covers I've identified and post tomorrow. Here's one of my favorites, look at the detail in the eye, it has the evolution of earth and man from dinosaurs to space. The pupil has man's accomplishments (as of 1928) Amazing Stories, April, 1928

Guest
"cool magazines" Going through them again makes me regret selling them but there's always something else to buy! Usually not what my wife wants though... Here are the covers I could identify in the Brzezniski print. I found 13 front covers and one back cover. With the pulps no longer in hand, hard to find more back cover images.
Automaton
I don't have a print. It would be great to have. A bunch of the aliens and the stilt walkers are from his planet series that I don't think made the front covers
