Osaka Robby service & repair

Hi all - I just joined Alphadrome, having recently bought a silver Robby Robot,  made by Osaka Tin Toy Co. He's superb and I hope the first of many acquisitions. I made the purchase from Robot Island in the USA.  There is a minor issue with Robby, unfortunately, in that he freezes up. Having emailed RI we've narrowed the fault down to his rotating antenna on the RHS of his head. The antenna is spring loaded and in order to remedy the problem it's necessary to gently pull the horizontal antenna, which is on a spring and that allows Robby to continue walking. I would like to ask - is this a problem any of you have come across, and is there any easy fix? Alternatively, is there anyone who specialises in the repair of these and similar robots in the UK? Many thanks in advance for any help. Best regards, Peter.

Welcome to Alphadrome PJB!  You'll find a wealth of knowledge here in regard to your collecting robots, Jay is a wonderful dealer whom I've dealt with many times over the years. Many of the Osaka repro Mechanized Robots have an issue or two mostly due to plastic gears, my daughter (*Altaira on Alphadrome) has 3 different ones, black (1991), ebay edition silver/red and custom John Rigg metallic green.  We've been lucky as all still run perfectly.

Try the search engine on Alphadrome for threads about repair of Mechanized Robots, you may find pics and info to help.

I'm confident someone here will post pics of the innards of these 'bots to show how it works and how to remedy problems.  There are many fine mechanics here on Alphadrome...I'm not one of them.

Have fun!

Try:     OTTI Mechanized     in the search engine, comes up with many threads you might find useful.

There are several threads on the Osaka mechanized robot repaire, the biggest problem with them is the plastic gear problem so they stop walking but the motor keeps running. So when your robot gets stuck, is the motor still running ? I am sure some one here will locate the threads on the on going problems with the Osaka Robby and post the links, I am not very good at looking up old threads.

Hi Robothut - thanks for your reply. When Robby freezes, the motor stops. Give his horizontal antenna a gentle tug and all is well again! As before I will search around but if anyone can provide a known solution that would be fab. Thanks again.

Welcome to the board PJB. I have nothing to add to the repair issue but wanted to say hello and hope you find everything you need here. No such thing as a dumb question here. Everyone has to start somewhere and there is a wealth of knowledge and experience on this forum. Feel free to take advantage of that. I would also encourage you to look at the database for information on the many types of vintage robots, rayguns and space related toys. It's a big help in determining what type of toys might appeal to your collecting sensibilities. Happy collecting!
