As seen in a 1976 Western Auto Christmas Gifts catalog:

Note the heart shaped chest piece.

Most likely a catalog-only photo sample. It helps to explain, though, why the colorful chest litho is shaped the way it is.

The heart extended down more than the circle.

The head appears to be a gray color, like the rest of the body, not chrome.

They were all made by Durham Industries.

Very Tin Man like, which actually might better explain the shoulder, elbow and knee joints, as well as the excessive bolts. Perhaps it was originally meant to be a modern day version of the Oz Tin Man?

That robot looks familiar. I think I got one at the last Botstock. ;) I didn't realize there were so many different variations of this guy. More robots to hunt for.

Great catch Joe!

There is also the blue UFO shogun warrior head version of the toy. The chrome one is one of my all time favs. I always thought it was made to be the tinman but they did not have the rights and had to design a new head, thank God for that. I can't even bring myself to buy the tinman rudy robot version.

When they went back to the drawing board (just speculating) they went to their best selling item ever, "Durham battery operated freight train" which is where they got the cyclops eye idea. Btw, that train is actually based on a K4 Pacific locomotive.

I don't mind the tin man. I believe he inspired me to like robots. He's my favorite character in the Wizard of Oz obviously. I have the Remco Tin Man (Rudy) and a Mego Tin Man and a 12 inch figure of him. I have a book on Star Wars and they credit all the robots that influenced the droids and they had Robby, Tobor and the Tin Man. So when it comes to him as a robot, I have no problem having him standing next to my attacking martian. They're all robots under the tin.
