geoffreypeeters
Here is an interesting link with some very nice close-ups of space toys on Laika : http://mashable.com/2014/10/02/soviet-space-dogs/ (review of book on Soviet Space Dogs : http://fuel-design.com/publishing/soviet-space-dogs/) I never trully understood why Russians would put dogs and mice in space and Americans monkeys... Racerxc70
The US sent fruit flies and corn seeds in 1947 aboard a V 2 rocket to a height of 106 miles, the flies survived (the corn was sent to Mosanto corp. kidding). Five Rhesus monkeys were sent up ( names Albert I, II, III, IV,V ) their flights could not be called successful because they all died from malfunction or miscalculation. The first successful US flight was with two monkeys named Able and Miss Baker on May 28 1959 on a Saturn rocket. The first animal to orbit the earth was sent by the Russians on Nov 3 1957 aboard Sputnik 2, it was a part husky named Laika, sadly their was no return strategy ( burned up on re-entry ). All these animals were sacrificed for science and should never be forgotten.
