Am I missing something here?

Don, American Pickers came here to Flint, Michigan once and I got the DL on their MO. Seems they come in first to "pre-pick" the place to see if there is anything worthy. If not, they may "plant" something. They rehearse then film the "on screen" pick. Technically the picks are legit but they are well planned out before cameras roll so the negotiation stuff is BS. A cool vintage juke box I saw in the background on American Pickers eventually showed up on Pawn Stars.

Just as I suspected and makes perfect sense to me Andy. Thanks for confirming it.

But I have to admit even though I know it's all staged, I still catch myself calling out advice to the sellers on these shows, like "I would just keep it!" or "you idiot" after they take a low offer. My girlfriend likes to call me on this when I do it, saying sarcastically "but it's all fake honey, remember?" Even so, I still get drawn in.

Yeah, I still watch them both. Staged or not they do show some cool stuff! And I still yell at everyone that brings their stuff to sell on Pawn Stars. sometimes my wifey yells with me.

What gets me are the episodes where a guy comes in and is willing to give up his family history/artifacts for a couple hundred $$ so he can go on vacation. Where's your loyalty man? :scratchhead:

I don't suspect for one minute that any of us thinks these shows are filmed as it actually happens, but it's entertaining. I like to watch American Pickers just to see the stuff they 'find'. I was involved in a UK TV show called "Car Boot Challenge" whereby two teams chase around a car boot sale/ swap meet trying to get the best deal from the traders. I sold some costume jewelery and a shop mannequin to the "red" team, but only after 20 minutes of rehearsals as to what we were all going to say and do....all good fun though!

Hah, or the ones that say they're gonna take the money and go gambling.

Yep! That cracks me up as well. During the negotiations the last $25 is a precious amount and fought for dearly. But then they are off to throw it away at the casinos! This is a perfect illustration of the disconnect from the value of a dollar that one experiences walking into a casino. I used to frequent casinos often and even read a book about and practiced card counting (you still need to have some initial luck on your side unless you have unlimited funds like the casinos). Since I became a collector I hardly ever gamble. Both gambling and collecting can leave you broke, but at least with collecting you have something to show for your money! Anytime I think about placing a bet it feels like I would be just giving away my next space toy!
