Once again Joe has sent me photocopies of a recent catalog acquisition (thanks Joe, I'm building up a nice little photocopy catalog library!) and this time it is the 1969 Lewis Galoob catalog. Now we can update this thread with some images. Here are the pages of interest.

BTW, I'm finding that the board will not pay attention to the order that you upload images, it seems to re-assign the order according to it's own design - oh well!!

Over the next couple days I'll update this three and a half year old thread (it took me that long to eBay-win one of these catalogs myself) and put all the robots and space toys spotted in this 1969 Lewis Galoob catalog into Timeline perspective.

Let me start with the second image the computer chose to post. It is a close-up of Item:

"#315 B/O Zero, WALKING SPACEMAN"

This is a perfect example of having a catalog sighting and still not knowing what toy has actually been dated!

A close examination of the photo of the toy would lead one to believe that this is the Cragstan Mr. Astronaut. See the Sotheby's/Griffith catalog, page 88, item #244(left). The wings and symbol on the helmet and chest match those of Mr. Astronaut. However, the description of the toy calls it "zero". As in Zero of Space? Again, see the Sotheby's/Griffth catalog, page 88, item #244(right).

(Feel free to jump in here Don, and post a close-up of that Sotheby's/Griffith photo grouping)

When a retailer ordered this catalog item #315, what do you suppose was actually shipped and received? Mr. Astronaut or Zero of Space?

More to follow...

Well Joe, here is the Griff catalog picture, and a recent thread about Mr. Astronaut variations, but as far as I can tell from these variations that ZZrobot posted, Zero of space seems to have consistently had the almond shaped eyes and the star on the helmet. Possibly more later on this one...

I believe the toy in the Lewis Galoob catalog is the same as this Salco Mr. Astronaut. If you look at the bottom of the box it even says "Walking Spaceman" as it does in the catalog listing.

:) Yonezawa Space Explorer was still in catalogues in 1969 for the same price as a Rotatomatic astronaut, $5.98! I'm finding recently that my whole mental timeline of tin toy robots has been moved up! -L7
