larry seven
:) Hi guys and gals. I just got around to cleaning up my Robot Commando after ten years, and all functions work except his eyes do not spin. There is no sign of any drive belt left in the robot. I am assuming that it was a small rubber belt, maybe not? Where does it drive off of? Thanks, -Larry
SH MIKE
You can use elastic cord from a fabric store. it works fine. The cord goes all the way down to the bottom of the Robot. You should see a pully with a small groove in it. You only have to turn one eye, the other oneis geared to it.
larry seven
:) Thanks, SH Mike. Where does it drive off of? The arm spinner shaft or a pulley down at the bottom? -L7
SH MIKE
Open the access door on the Robot's left side and you should see a Yellowpully with a Black plastic washer on the end of it. if you look insidethe head, there should be a wheel with a groove behind the Robots Left Eye.The cord goes down and twists 90 degrees and goes around the pully.make it tight enough so it does not slip but loose enough not to bind anything.I repaired mine without using any tools except for a screwdriver.you will end up with a knot in the cord but it should not cause any problems.Make sure you make a small knot and it fits into the groove.I think the original cord was cloth cover elastic too. It is still available at Fabric Stores.

Zesko
Holy crap, I didn't know Glass designed the "Smash-Up Derby"... I had that set as a kid, and it drove my mother crazy... It wasn't the toy itself that drove her nuts, it was the Smash-Up Derby song that I used to sing all the time...Demolition Demon drives a beat-up ChevroletIt ain't worth a dollar, so he wrecks it every dayCrash, bang, smash 'em upPut 'em back againCrash, bang, smash 'em upIt's Smash-Up time, my friendThere were a few more lyrics, but I only vaguely remember something about "Smash-Up Derby Set, you can hoot and holler, 'cuz you aint seen nothin' yet"... Don't you miss the days when toys had neat, memorable songs to go with them? Like Slinky and Wheel-O and the Smash-Up Derby.
dratomic
I had no idea that so many of those toys were designed by the same person (and I certainly had no idea who that person was). The fact that games like Mousetrap, Operation, and a host of others have lasted to today stands as testimony to the Glass's skill and ingenuity. Thanks for pointing out the website, robotnut. larry seven
:) Thanks everyone! I can't wait until tomorrow, so that I can stop at the fabric store! Where else but Alphadrome can you ask a question about a 40 year old robot and get a referral to the photos of the patent! I love this board! -Larry
Andyman
Wow! I didn't realize how many toys and games Marvin Glass developed! I had about half of those at that web site!
