Action Robot
Hey all, I just recently purchased the battered shell of the Masudaya Space Explorer X-17 on the ebays, with the intention of turning it into a pendant lamp for my studio (it's missing all the internal workings, and beat up enough so that I don't feel bad about repurposing it). I'm wondering if anyone has ideas about where I might find some red and green plastic lenses that would work for this project. They don't have to be original or exact... I'm not looking to spend a bundle...but the closer, the better. The seller said the holes are about 1inch in diameter (that's 2.5cm for you international types). I'd either like something that looks like the original lens, or perhaps something with a dome or bubble shape. I'm also open to other colors, but I'd prefer to stick to the originals. Also, if anyone can tell me the diameter of the bottom opening of the saucer so I can start looking for a frosted white lens or dome for that, I'd be very appreciative. And last but not least, does anyone recall where I can find the excellent thread on tin toy repair that covers dent removal? My toy looks like it was rolled several times by a drunken astronaut... Thanks in advance! Dave

JimK
What a coo idea! That thing will lend itself well to a pendant lamp. Can't wait to see it done JimK

Roboto
When doing my Xmas Zoomer I needed clear green lense. I used the thick plastic packing that many items are package in. I cut the size needed and used a colored clear green paint that is avaiable in the Auto shops to paint it. They come in colors as an anodized paint to be used on Chrome items and they even have clear colored red and amber for Auto rear lights. :)
robothut
Googly eyes that you can buy at craft stores and on line can be used to make great lenses. You cut of the solid back side and let the black googly eye fall out as all you want is the eye dome part. They come in sizes from 2mm to several inches. I have even seen them for sale in Walmart and dollar stores come to think of it. Then use some krylon translucent colord spray, you can get it in red , blue, green, yellow and amber. The spray can be bought on line or at craft stores and is used for many things like fake stained glass windows. I have used it for many years to tint lamps for Robbys and B9 robots as well as tinting clear resin when I need to cast a reproduction of a Gang robot eye or dome part. Also googly eyes make for great rivet effects for all those steam punk projects and boiler type robots.
Action Robot
All right, some great tips so far y'all, keep em coming. And thanks Blechroboter, that was exactly the thread I was thinking about! I did a few google searches for "round plastic lens" in various colors, and after much digging came up with a few interesting pieces. Nothing exactly right for this project, but I thought they might be good for someone's robot or spacetoy project... This one is 1" diameter and 9/16" high, also available in amber. Link is underneath. http://www.iowa80.co...eplacement+Lens Next is a bezel that fits a 2 1/2 inch light, so I'm guessing that's the inside dimension... a super-cool dome or window! Link underneath... http://www.iowa80.co...ezel+with+Visor And finally, the closest I came to the look I wanted, but I think these are about 2.5 inches in diameter... too big for my needs. But they come in 6 COLORS! Link underneath. http://www.bigrigchr...OD/PILC/UP37056 Or how about a jewel lens? I've seen these in red, blue, and purple...not sure of the size, but again it's for truck lighting, so I think it's smallish like these others. http://www.75chromes...products_id=408 Here's a variety of 3/8 inch lenses... http://www.gardentru...ax=10&startAt=1 All of these are pretty cheap. I hope they provide someone with inspiration for that special project! Dave

Action Robot
Great idea, WJN...if anyone has a spare one, how 'bout sending it my way? I've been scouring the dumpsters around my neighborhood, but haven't turned up an Attacking Martian yet... Dave
