Any fans of Dan Dare? If so, you all might want to pick up Dan Dare: The Biography by Daniel Tatarsky. (Orion Books, 2010) I stumbled on it last week and have really been enjoying it.

It's a complete history of the Dan Dare comic strip and Eagle Magazine, including biographies of the character's two creators, Frank Hampson and Marcus Morris. Tatarsky is a nimble writer who wears his enthusiasm for the character on his sleeve. He hits all the high points as he moves through the characters' and creators' histories, breathing life into Hampson and Morris without getting too bogged down in the mundanity of their day-to-day lives. And of course he delivers the nitty-gritty, behind-the-scenes information on Dan Dare that fans live for. It's really a fantastic book about one of science fiction's most successful heroes.

The 300-page book includes more than 60 color plates showcasing the different characters and ships; rough sketches and mock-up art; back-to-back comparisons of art by Hampson and the people who followed him; and some of the Dan Dare merchandise available at the time. There's also a section containing detailed plot summaries for all the story arcs, with information on which issues they ran in, the dates of publication, and which characters were featured.
