Phil R
I've been wanting to make a First Spaceship On Venus Cosmostrator model. Since they're hard to come by I decided to try an alternative. I asked Jim if he would be interested in making one. Of course he would! Well, he made a great 12" Cosmostrator out of wood. My intent was to do a diorama with the model. I had an 18" barrel top with a groove. I fastened flexible laminate to it with screws and anchored it with bondo. I then finished the sanding, primer and painting for the rocket, added some embellishments with ports on main and secondary rockets, a viewing command center at the top and the name at the bottom. I then carved mountains out of foam, covered int with plaster and outdoor paint. I glued the mountains in place. I wanted them to kind of resemble ruins. I added the ground effects including the landing blast ring. I painted the entire diorama including the sky effect with the Earth. I used artistic license with the Earth's larger size from Venus. The moon would be 1/4" and far from Earth so I just say it's on the opposite side of Earth. I added a small vehicle I had as well as 7/8" bubble gum spacemen trinkets I had and painted. As to the scale the Cosmostrator is so large( I don't know for sure) that the figures would be too small and I can say the vehicle was assembled on site from modules. Jim also matted the drawing I bought for the project as well as a copy of the DVD cover.

Electric Robot and Son
Phil, Jim, Another great collaboration! A truly classic looking rocket ship. The framed blueprints and poster look great with the diorama. If you guys keep this up we are going to need a separate forum for dioramas!

JimK
What kind of wood was used for the ship? The ship is made from Poplar wood. It is easy to work with, has a fine grain (good for painting) and best of all is fairly cheap in this area. The main parts are turned from wood I "found" up the street on trash day. Ya don't get any cheaper then that. :P JimK
