Sparkrobot Posted January 23, 2011 Share Posted January 23, 2011 Here he is guys,after a month of sweat and toil,designing?finding somewhere to build him? and then the actual build,,,,my almost 2 ft model /version of Biolerplate is eventually here [at this time on video only,,detailed pics and a build summery will follow in a few days] He is called IRON JACK and if scaled up would stand an impressive 8 ft tall. Presented by Her Majesty Queen Victoria to The London Metropolitan Police Force in 1894 to serve as a formidable crime fighter in the ever increasing dangerous streets of Victorian London. Invented and Built by the esteemed scientist Professer Ernest Postlewaite,the ultimate deterent to any Thief or Vangabond that would dare to show their face . Excellent Steve,,,, and may I say so,, very brave. I'll call it IRON JACK out of the SHADOWS. First of all I have to apologise that I didn't take many pics during the build This was mainly because a lot of Jack was trial and error. The first problem was the design of Jack,,Andy knows I've allways liked this type of robot I have my own Andyman version Stoke. I knew it had to be loosely based on Boilerplate but that is not as easy as it sounds because the best feautures of Boilerplate in my mind is his head and face and I couldn't think of anything that wasn't a blatant copy..Then while doodling one evening I had the eureka moment of the Top hat,,I can show the original concept drawing that followed that night ,the other key feauture of Jack was going to be his hooded eyes after I was happy with his face and head really the rest just fell into place. Sparkrobot Posted January 24, 2011 Author Share Posted January 24, 2011 The materials I used to build him were I think quite unorthodox coming from the construction industry I found bits that I knew I could work with easily. So his body was part of a drainage pipe the shoulder section was a reducer and the base was a similar pipe adapter section.His head and hat are believe it or not solid lead. Wearing gloves this can be cut easily with strong scissors. The arms and legs come from an artists manakin,,I bought the 16" version thats what gives him his impressive stature [ this caused problems later as I couldn't use action man scaled items] I thought the hands were going to be a task untill I was rummaging through the shed and found an old Mr. Potato Head.So that was the hands sorted. The red ''glass' was from a plastic folder I had ,,Just had to roll it into tubes and it finds its own shape.The door was going to open originally but the dolls house hinges I used failed[The weight of the lead causing it's first problem.] Also in our Pound shop they sell these epoxy putty pellets ,I found them very effective and usefull during the whole build. I used a tip frm Boilerplate for the painting using a product BPs creator recommended,,,Rub n Buff ,,I bought pewter ,but I found I could tint it with all sorts of stuff [ trade secret] B) .The darker black looking tube you can see in the pic was my second brainwave ,,it is flashband a type of cheap lead with a sticky back I used this for all the textured parts.When painted and sealed you could never guess I had used it. Sparkrobot Posted January 24, 2011 Author Share Posted January 24, 2011 These are the Out of the Shadows pics,,all the detailing speaks for itself.my wife found me the mini padlock ,,the truncheon I wittled out of a bit of dowel using a dremmell hobby tool [ very usefull] Originally his knees were going to be articulated aswell but the weight of the lead proved that impossible,,Like a lot of things with Jack this forced me to make changes that I actually prefer.His knees had to be built out using the epoxy putty and lead straps added. The build didn't go without mishaps,,before his knees were strengthened he fell off the window cill ,,all that happened were his hat and head got bent ,an easy fix with lead. I thought he was finished ,but where I hadn't fixed his feet into a stable position before I made his boots ,there was still very slight movement in his ankles ,but enough movement to never fully trust him standing alone so to complete him I gave him big lead straps on his boots and then scewed him to a plinth I already had. By the way,,,,I didn't really think the chimney was agood design feature ,but I knew you guys would 'pick up on' the fact that if he's a boiler he HAS to have a chimnney. I think that covers everything,Oh I almost forgot,,the lights for his eyes and boiler are a mixture of cheap LED,s and flicker bulbs.
