Joe K.
A recently ended auction listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&hash=item45f780bc56&item=300505152598&nma=true&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&rt=nc&si=hne%252FEEX0dqBv4qIy5TSDspR95vI%253D The dated catalog cover: http://www.dalebooks.com/dale/1955toycatalog.jpg This page, specifically: http://www.dalebooks.com/dale/1955toycatalog22.jpg The Marx Captain Space Solar Scout Rifle was originally sighted by Dr. Atomic in this unidentified/undated catalog page back in 2007: This Geo. Worthington Co. catalog confirms the 1955 date. The Rocket Sock-it Rifle and Target by Kenner has previously been Timeline dated to 1956. This sighting moves that date back one year. That Timeline thread can be seen here: The Rex Mars Planet Signal Gun by Marx has been dated to 1954, however different color variations were produced over a period of years. The Remco Electronic Space Gun was also re-issued in a variety of color combinations between 1953 and 1965.
ANZinSpace
There's also the Marx space tank (I think that's what it was called) bottom middle of this picture near the sellers fingers - Marx Tank
Joe K.
Right you are, ANZ. Good eye! That's the Rex Mars Planet Patrol Sparkling Space Tank by Marx. See the Alphadrome Database for additional information. I believe this is the first time this toy has been Timeline dated.

Fineas J. Whoopie
The 1955 sightings of the Captain Space Solar Scout Rifle show a two-toned image. Now I've never seen a two-toned example of the gun so perhaps the the 1955 image is a "prototype image" and therefore the toy was new that year?
