1977 Patent For R2d2 Design

Patent applied for in 1977 and granted in 1979 for R2D2 design. So if you have the very first R2D2 toy post a picture of it, others need not apply.

This isn't for the toy -- the first toy, made by Kenner, didn't feature the third leg. This looks like the patent for the robot itself. Ralph McQuarrie was the original production designer for Star Wars and drew the early versions of all the characters and vehicles.

I really like this version of R2. It's so simplified... Really clean looking.

I note that "Mr Atomic" is cited on the R2 patent... is this because you have to show that your thing is an improvement on another thing, in order to patent it? Are they trying to claim that R2 is an "improvement" on Mr Atomic? :lol:
