What do you make of this 1935 Sears catalog page?:

Below the selection of Buck Rogers toys is a 3-Pc. Pirate Holster Set. The ad copy reads:

Let's play Treasure Island!

Fancy shape 7-in. gun with

rapid fire pump action. In

leather holster with belt.

That "fancy shape 7-in gun" looks very much like a Z-Z Pop Ray Gun by Wyandotte, except the rear sight is mounted more forward.

Here's Phil R's 1941 Timeline entry for the litho tipped version of the Z-Z Pop:

Anybody have this pirate gun in their collection?

Here's the pic. I cropped it to make the file smaller, but preserve the details of the salient section.

To answer your question, Joe... Nope, I've never seen this one before. Unless it's the unpainted version that commonly comes up on eBay -- but I don't have a picture in front of me to compare the two.

Really interesting find!

Joe and I discussed this at his shop today. It certainly looks like the same gun and a weird item for a pirate gun even with overproduction. As to the sight being positioned more front, there could be a number or reasons for the discrepancy.
