dratomic
Robotnut -- That's sad about Daisy. They make my absolute favorite metal ray gun, the Buck Rogers XZ-44 Liquid Helium gun (red and yellow version...). It's just a work of art, absolutely beautiful, and a wonderful representation of deco stylings. As are the other Buck guns, especially the XZ-38 Disintegrator and the U238 Atomic Disintegrator (nice picture, by the way). Do you know when they're taking the factory down? Michigan is pretty far from me -- too bad, I'd like to see the factory sometime. So much toy history...
Robotnut
It is a sad day, I just called my father in law who droveby the plant last week. At that time all that was left wasthe front facade and metal frame. He is quite sure the restis likely down by now. Dr Atomic, I'll be visiting in a coupleweeks, I'll report as to what's left. If possible, I'll try toscavenge the site and get you a souvenir...Here's a blurb from the local historical society andthe last published picture. The Plymouth Iron Windmill Works was built in 1882, theMarkham Air Rifle Plant in 1886, and the Daisy Air RiflePlant in 1895. Plymouth was the air rifle capital of theworld from 1886 to 1958. During the 1930's and 40's Daisywas famous for their incredibly popular futuristic Buck Rogersray guns...P.S. I have no idea who the happy lady is in the picture...
Robotnut
Here's an update for Dr. Atomic...Well the old Daisy air gun factory is gone, butit will live on. I was there last night, but it wastoo dark to take pictures. Everything is goneexcept the facade which has been reinforced.Apparently the Plymouth historical society wona small victory. The facade will be used to fronta new condo developement that will be on thesite. Although I didn't get any pictures, I did getDr Atomic a souvenir. With stealth and under thecover of darkness, I was able to get a brick fromoriginal 110 year old part of the building. Atomic,Email me with your address and I ship you thebrick...
dratomic
THANK YOU! That's wonderful. It's funny, I had thought about emailing you to ask if it'd be possible to snag a brick or something, but I didn't want to bug you with such a strange request. Guess it wasn't so strange after all... :)Anyway, I really appreciate it. I'll email you shortly.
dratomic
Hey all. Just a mention -- I know a lot of people go directly to the Robot Talk page and skip the Alphadrom Table of Contents page. So I just wanted to let people know that I'm selling my Renwal Planet Jet -- if anyone's interested, you can see the ad there. Thanks a lot. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. Andyman
I know this is an old post dratomic but I just had to tell you that I shared a similar experience with my "Cosmic Ray Gun" I bought in NY this past summer. I had just bought the thing and my family and I were getting ready to board the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. Going through the tedious security check I suddenly realised I had the gun in my bag and it was about to be x-rayed! I quickly told the guard that there was a "toy" ray gun in my bag and that he shouldn't freak out when he sees it's profile on the monitor. He then had me take it out of the bag. After I showed it to him he told me he should confiscate it. Alarmed, I asked why and he said, "because it's so cool looking!"
