robothut Posted November 8 Author Posted November 8 I still do not understand why they keep doing this to old BW movies. BW movies have a look and feel all their own and many times are visually better than color films.
Brian.. Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Yes, the colourising ruins the film. Apparently youngsters today won't watch black and white movies.
Joe K. Posted November 8 Posted November 8 And then, there's this (complete with a "new and improved" Patricia Neal): The Day the Earth Stood Still 1950s super panavision 70 AI Teaser Trailer #superpanavision70

I agree - its one thing to digitally preserve and restore B&W classics that were shot on film, and another entirely to colorize. Many beautifully done film noir and sci-fi classics were produced with lighting and effects designed to be optimal, moody, or dramatic in B&W format; colorization detracts from the original's visual impact and character. I have a feeling that the directors/producers of many of these classics, if they were still around, would not approve...

The people who do these claim it's to "get new audiences", specifically those people who won't watch anything B&W. As though a sloppy/lazy colorization will be the magic bullet to get them to watch something that predates their existence. In most of the cases of colorized movies like this one, they can polish and paint the turd all they want and it's still going to be a turd.
