Now, 50 years later, Netflix is planning a new live-action take – the first attempt since a John Woo-directed pilot failed to catch light for The WB in 2003.

Here's everything we know about the new Lost in Space – from an all-new cast to the status of that classic theme tune.

Lost in Space TV series: So what's happening?

It was announced in October 2014 that Legendary Television (The Expanse, Colony) was developing a new reboot of Lost in Space, with screenwriting duo Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless – known for The Last Witch Hunter and Gods of Egypt – hired to script the new series.

A little over a year later in November 2015, the project was sold to ol' money bags Netflix, with Neil Marshall (The Descent) directing the pilot episode and acting as an executive producer.

In June the following year, Netflix greenlit a full season, with vice president Cindy Holland telling Deadline: "The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience.

"The current creative team's reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world."

Zack Estrin will serve as the Lost in Space showrunner. He's got form for crafting escapist popcorn entertainment, having previously worked as a writer / producer on Prison Break.

Toby Stephens, who's been cast as the new John Robinson, told Collider that the new revamp is "a very clever, modern reworking of a great story".

"The fundamental story is that it's a family that is lost in a difficult, life-threatening situation and how it challenges them and brings them closer together," Stephens said. "That is essentially what the story of this is, it's just the context is a lot more modern.

"It's a more modern take on the '60s version. If you look at it now, it's charming, but it seems so innocent. Whereas this is a version that is for our time. I'm hoping it will still have humor and humanity in it, but it has obviously gotta be for a modern audience."

Here's who'll be manning the spaceship Jupiter 2 in the revived series:

• Toby Stephens (Black Sails) as John Robinson, the expedition commander.

• Molly Parker (House of Cards) as Maureen Robinson, a fearless and brilliant aerospace engineer who makes the decision to bring her family to space, for a chance at a new life on a better world.

• Ignacio Serricchio as Don West, a roughneck smuggling luxury goods on the side who discovers in the Robinsons the family he never thought he would find.

• Taylor Russell as Judy Robinson, John and Maureen's eldest child.

• Mina Sundwall as Penny Robinson, one of the Robinson children.

• Maxwell Jenkins as Will Robinson, the youngest Robinson child.

• Parker Posey as Dr Smith

Yup – in the original series, Dr Zachary Smith was played by the late Jonathan Harris. An enemy agent, Smith sabotages the Jupiter 2, causing the ship to become – you guessed it – lost in space. But he ends up stranded aboard the ship, becoming a reluctant stowaway.

Across the show's original three-season run, Smith's character shifted from outright villain to loveable (often bungling) schemer.

The role will be reimagined as female for the new Lost in Space, with Golden Globe nominee Parker Posey being cast in November 2016.

Lost in Space original cast: Could they appear?

With the exceptions of Harris and Guy Williams, who played the original John Robinson, the remainder of the original Lost in Space cast – June Lockhart (Maureen Robinson), Mark Goddard (Don West), Marta Kristen (Judy Robinson), Angela Cartwright (Penny Robinson), and Billy Mumy (Will Robinson) – is still with us.

That means there's potential for some knowing cameo appearances in the new series (though there's been no official confirmation on that front so far).

Lost in Space release date: When will it drop on Netflix?

Production began on the series in January 2017 in Vancouver and concluded in June.

After almost a year's worth of post-production – sci-fi spectacle doesn't come cheap or easy – Lost in Space is scheduled for a May 2018 launch on Netflix.

Lost in Space episodes: How many are we getting?

The first season will span 10 episodes, each lasting an hour (give or take, what with Netflix being flexible on running times).

Lost in Space robot: Will it return?

One of the most memorable aspects of the original Lost in Space was the robot – a "Class M-3, Model B9, General Utility Non-Theorizing Environmental Robot" designed by Robert Kinoshita, who also designed the iconic Robby the Robot for 1956's Forbidden Planet (which Lost In Space's nameless robot is still often confused with.)

The Robot possessed superhuman stretch and futuristic weaponry, and often displayed 'human' characteristics – it was apparently able to experience both joy and sadness, and could even sing and play music.

It will appear in the new series in a modified form

And so it begins!

Here is a glimpse of what the robot may look like called BG.

The casting brief for the actor to play the Robot was for body suit work indicating the new Robot will likely be a humanoid biped styled piece of equipment.

It is rumored amongst fans that the new robot is a cross between “Iron Man and Gort” after an image of what MAY have been the new robot was posted in one of the facebook groups but then very quickly removed.
