I had always assumed the mixed color smokers were assembled from arbitrarily selected parts, and you got what you got, but this is the exact same color pattern as on my shelf, so not so much a "use up the spare parts", as a specifically designed color scheme. Roboto
Most were one offs however there were some made with the same patterns those came from Papa-san with a inner card and had a number sometimes. Towards the end many were made with use up those spare parts and they sold very well. With Papa-san with the same pattern anywhere from 1 to 12 makes may have been done. A lot of the ones they made had that unique look to them and are very collectible like these shown below! The last photo shown is the Astro Dooms that came with card as 1 of 1 color made with a total of only 6 Astro Dooms ever made and the Astro Zombie with 12 makes only. Roboto
The end of an era( Papa-San-Comet toys ) as Robert G Johnson is no longer with us. Robert Gene Johnson Johnson, Robert Gene Aug. 9, 1961 - July 12, 2017. Age 55, of Maple Grove. Robert passed away after an arduous battle with respiratory illness and chronic pain. Preceded in death by parents, Catherine and Alexander Johnson, and his beloved Italian greyhound, Orbit. Survived by significant other, Renée Anderson; children, Nicholas and Jordi Johnson, sisters, Penelope Paris and Janet Butler; and his two dear chihuahuas, Zoomer and Bella. Robert was an internationally acclaimed toy manufacturer, designer and vintage toy expert, and a world-class double-bass drummer, whose band had opened for Prince. RoboDerby
Thank you Roboto for sharing these photos over the years of Robert’s robots. “Frankenbots” or not, Papa San was responsible for putting out some unique robots with dazzling color schemes and fabulous box art. I personally shall continue to seek out more of these toys to add to my own collection. That said if any members are wishing to sell Papa Sans from their own collections in the future, please consider messaging me as I would likely be interested in the opportunity to purchase them. Thanks to Robert Johnson for his contribution to the art and hobby. It is a legacy of color and imagination that he leaves behind in these toys. Frankenstein---GoldenBat---Robin---Batman---Devil---Skeleton and Herman. Great robot collecting spirits, may the Papa San Golden Bat robot someday find its way into my collection. Being a fan of Papa San and also of Ogon Bat, this would be a fantastic addition, along with so many of these other incredible customs of course.
