There have been a few designs for the Sonicon toys, but the early Electro mechanical ones "no IC's or transsistors, or microphones" versions are my favorite. A few images of the sonicon toys.

The system works by using a Helmholtz resonator. This is a tuned enclosure, think of a drum. Then add two electrical contacts that can freely open and close in a way that if the resonator were to receive a sound that is in tune with it the two contacts would vibrate. The two electrical contacts control a DC relay, so if no sound is present the contacts keep the relay ON and if the electrical contacts vibrate then the relay will turn OFF as a DC relay does not like fast switching control signals. The relay can then be used to turn a drive motor ON or OFF or in the case on Sonicon toys it can be used to reveses the direction of motor rotation. If the motor runs one direction then the toy moves forward, if the motor runs the other direction the drive wheel unit rotates to a new direction.

What realy makes this wind up robot different from other wind up robots is the wind up spring, its nothing like a normal wind up toy, its like the wind up radios that you have seen or own, not the ones that charge a battery when you turn a crank but the ones that wind a large flat coil of metal from one spool to another spool. You know you wind then up for 30 seconds and they run for 30 minuts. Well the same type of wind up device is used in this toy , it runs longer than any other wind up robot for its size and the power and speed stay very constant from start to finnish.

Verbot was one of the first toys that could actualy tell the difference from one word or sound from another. For example remember Electro at the 1939 worlds fair "no I was not there" he had voice command but it worked by detecting the pause between sounds and counting these pauses just like a old rotory phone counted the contact closeures. There have been other toys that had so called voice command controls as well but these were like Robot Commando (breath control) or counted pauses as well. But the realy cool part of VERBOT is not the voice control its actualy the motor gearbox design. It a automated version of the gear box in Robot COmmando in that 1 motor runs almost everything, the computer control's the gear box shifter and the main motor does the rest. Other toys have used this single motor design like the TOMY ARMOTRON toy.

I have one in my collection made by BLUE BOX the same company that held the patent. The arms are different on mine and pictures I have seen of another Alphadromers Silver Warrior had the same arms as mine so I am not sure if the robot was sold with the arms shown in the patent or not. The same body was also used on a few variations of the Karate robots. Not in the time line so I do not know when it was actualy first offord for sale.

Patent file date is 1956 and was issued in 1957, our time line shows the toy being sold in 1956. I do have a Z-Man in my collection but again it was dirt cheep and is missing the rocket launchers. I new a guy once that had a mint in box Z-Man, instruction book and all inserts, he did not want to sell it. So if you have good pictures of a Z-Man and box feel free to post the pictures here.

Back in 1904 Lehmann applied for a patent for a human like walking mechanism. The patent was granted in 1905. They used for a wind up toy called ADAM. I have used the basic design for walking robots starting 2007 with a smoking robot cart pusher I called Speedy delivery and in 2019 with a 3d printed cart pusher I call ADAM. I have a PDF of the patent. but the new Alphadrome set up does not take PDF files any longer. So will look for a PDF to jpeg converter program.

There are patents that go back over 100 years for these types of toys the most famous one being the Wilson walking toy of 1936. But this one is aimed at a robot toy being the end result so thought it should be here. Alot of the patent tex is in japanese but not all, and the drawings nere the end of the PDF file tell the real story anyway. Here is link for the files, the patent files are to large to attach.
